Apple Watch Technology
the launch of Apple's first new product category which is the
iPad. And the ipad was a game changer in terms
of accessibility, bringing many features that are designed for
people with disabilities at launch. And how will the Apple
Watch was compare and what are the some of the
challenges and possibilities for the Apple Watch which are
related to accessibility? And a lot of questions remain
unanswered, but the wait will soon be over.
And Apple Watch is supposed
to include the built-in software accessibility features when it launched, and
however these reports have not been confirmed by the company Apple. And it
would make sense and align with Apple's patterns if they included features such
as voiceover and Zoom in this Apple Watch. And while the presence of these
features seems likely, so how these features are implemented will be the key
for people with disabilities.
And the Apple Watch
could be proving useful to people with the various disabilities. And Apple has
already established the direction-finding capabilities of the Watch which
include providing characteristic taps when a wearer needs to turn left or right
while walking. So this feature could be aid sightless and visually reduced users
when navigating unfamiliar areas. And additionally, the device could help
remind users to complete the daily tasks like taking medication. And This
watch, which can be used Apple Pay your purchases and other forms of verification
benefit users with physical disabilities who cannot handle a credit card for
example.
And Just like with the
iPad, the app developers will likely be key in coming up with unique assistive
apps. And the starting developer tools with have some limitations that could
hold back to developers, and but hopefully useful assistive apps will
still be made available.
And With all the
potential benefits there are some challenges that restrict from the device's
small screen and buttons. And first, the "digital crown," that which
is a small dial on the side of the Apple Watch, which could pose challenges to
users with physical disabilities and dexterity challenges. And the
"digital crown" which is used for scrolling and zooming may be difficult
and it is not impossible for some people to operate. And it will be interesting
to see if Apple will develop a software solution to this potential challenge.
And similarly, the small screen with small icons may prove difficult to press
for some users.
And Apple's
"force touch" gesture would also be proved challenging for users with
physical disabilities to perform. And a "force touch" is a tougher to
press on the touch screen display that appeals different actions from a lighter
tap. And From Apple's demonstrations, and this gesture seems vital to the
operation of this watch so hopefully a software solution will be available for
users who are unable to perform these gesture.
So Hopefully the Apple
Watch will follow in the iPad's footsteps and be a game changer in terms of
accessibility. If you are thinking of purchasing the Apple Watch, but have disbelieves
about your ability to cooperate with this device due to a disability I would
strongly recommend heading to an Apple Store in April to try check out one.
